The first of November is almost upon us, and with it Dia de Muertos, Mexico’s Day of the Dead!

DAY OF THE DEAD 2018

Back in 2011 we brewed our original Day of the Dead as part of the 24/24. Inspired by the Aztec beverage xocolatl, “a bitter, frothy, spicy drink”, it is a black lager with cocoa, smoked chipotle chilli, vanilla pods, agave syrup and cocoa nibs creating a smooth and complex mix of smoke, chocolate and restrained chili heat that builds as you drink.

Since that first celebration, Day of the Dead has been joined by La Calevera Catrina, the elegant skull, a blonde maize lager, little sister to our original dead head and thanks to a generous addition of Habanero chilli, possessed of a far more assertive chilli heat than the smoky chipotle of her brother. Every year La Calevera divides her adoring drinkers between those who gasp at her intensity and those who crave more. Every year we strive to find the perfect balance of fiery habanero heat and sweet rosewater and watermelon. This year I think we’ve done well - but you’ll have to decide for yourself.

And for those who want to celebrate in the most decadent way possible, we also have the return of Triple Day of the Dead, the ultimate amped up version of the original DOTD, brewed strong with extra helpings of smoked chipotle chilli, cocoa and agave, then aged for over a year in freshly emptied Tequila barrels, and finished on raw cocoa nibs. Incredibly rich and dark, Triple Day possesses a uniquely complex mix of spice, oak, smoke, chocolate and restrained chilli heat.
